5 songs to smoke to that your weeded ass forgot · by Sach O


In case you’re as bored of that Channel Live jam as I am

I’ve wanted to make a post about weed-related Hip Hop songs ever since Serg dropped knowledge on beer way back when. But I er…was too lazy. The truth of the matter is, I don’t spend much time thinking about weed when I’m not smoking it so writing a lengthy diatribe on the subject isn’t very enticing. Despite the large number of related magazines out there, there’s not all that much to say on the subject and most of the good stuff has already been run into the ground. In the 70’s.

That said, this is a PSA announcement for all of the Hip Hop stoners out there: stop playing the same shit over and over again. Sure it’s easy to throw on a Cypress Hill CD or Doggystyle or Redman or anything made by Madlib but there’s a ton of underrated weed tracks out there. Get off your ass and find some new shit ya lazy bastards! Or at least throw some of these on your next “totally awesome playlist that your friends have GOT to hear”.

Memphis Bleek – I Get High
I’d have to assume that Bleek is a heavy smoker. I mean he IS the head weed carrier for a man who claims that he doesn’t even smoke so SOMEONE’s burning that shit before it goes dry. In any case, that would explain why some of the few highlights in Bleek’s catalogue are his smoking songs, particularly this gem from his second album. Advocating the fairly retarded practice of drinking, smoking and driving, Bleek let’s the beat do most of the work, content to brag to Jay-Z’s leftovers about how dope his weed is. It may not be glamorous but at least he’s being honest about the joys and low expectations of the weed carrier lifestyle. The beat sounds really dope in good in headphones too.

The Eastsidaz – G’d up
Snoop Dogg probably smokes more weed than anyone on the planet and consequently requires a literal army of weed carriers. Like a black hole, countless west coast rappers get caught in dude’s smoky gravitational pull and even those who try to escape and gain some traction of their own (Daz, Kurupt,) eventually end up right back where they started. This rarely results in much of a career for anyone signed to Snoop’s boutique label of the moment but it’s a brilliant arrangement for the Doggfather as years of chronic marijuana abuse have all but neutered Snoop’s once slick flow which now works best in small doses. The Eastsidaz and Nate Dogg imitator Butch Cassidy may have been seen as poor substitutes for The Dogg Pound, but in retrospect they were at least partially responsible for the man’s best mid-career releases. G’d Up, the lead single from the group’s self titled debut is simple, funky and perfect to light a blunt to which is all that’s really asked of a Snoop Dogg song. It’s a shame that these guys got caught up with the gang life they were rapping about and disappeared but two other carriers will inevitably step up to the plate.

Cunninlynguists – Beautiful Girl
A Piece of Strange was a heavy, proggy piece of work indebted to album oriented rock as much as a body rocking Hip Hop which makes it perfect for blunt smokers demanding deep thoughts along with their deep grooves. Still, it’s more than a little depressing with the exception of the bouncy and radiant “Beautiful Girl”. Sure, weed-as-woman tracks won’t win over anyone looking for originality, but Kno’s funky morphing rhythms give the song a momentum that most tracks on the subject sorely lack. Throw in choice scratches from EPMD’s Jane series and Blueprint era vocal samples and horns and you’ve got a big budget track in a lo-fi disguise.

Do or Die ft Kanye West – Higher
Kanye must be annoying as fuck to smoke with. Dude probably brags for half an hour about how great his weed is, insists on rolling, fucks it up, takes hours to re-roll and then smokes half the blunt in one pull. Do or Die on the other hand sound like some relaxing dudes to chill out with and thankfully Ye’ adapts to their fast-slow dynamic for this highlight from their 2005 release. Straight jacking Teddy Pendergrass’ spacey gospel-come-love song and flipping it into a double time ode to ganja, Kanye catches a Holy Ghost and D.O.D do what they do best. The use of the Teddy’s chorus is actually pretty ingenious, say what you want about Mr. West but he was far more clever on the chipmunk tip than the sharks who played the style out.

KMD – Contact Blitz
KMD goes on tour with the Leaders of the New School. Tensions run high as Zev Luv X hates on Onyx’ flat top. The rappers break out the greenery. The asshole bus driver catches a contact before pulling over and forcing them to put the weed out. The angry Native Tongues affiliates break out the NWA tapes and eventually, Doom writes a rhyme about the whole thing to a hard jazz loop and throws it on Bl_ck B_st_rds. Why this isn’t the Holy Grail of weed songs, I’ll never know.
