What are YOU smoking to?
Proving once and for all that the war on drugs is a failed enterprise, the last “5 songs to smoke to” post was a smashing success inspiring over a dozen suggested tracks in the talkbacks. From canonical necessities (anything Devin) to regional favorites (X-Raided and Gangster Pat), there was a lot to smile about, so much so that I decided to highlight a few personal favorites suggested by YOU the readers. Big Shoutouts to the kid p, hernandez, christo, gUeV and da dude for the wininng suggestions. Now light one up and bobyahead2dis.
Lost Boyz – Puff Harder
411: While Cali kept it laid back with their weed anthems, New York has always been on some stimulated hyperactive dust-laced dimebag shit. This latter day anthem from the Lost Boyz features all of the humorous lyrics, filtered-bass heavy production and happy go lucky delivery that made them one of New York’s commercial forerunners in the early Bad Boy era.
Best feature: That dated gothic “puff harder” chant sounds absolutely ridiculous after a few drags. Not quite as ill as Buckwild’s synthesized orchestra for Black Rob’s “Whoa”, but hilarious all the same.
Put it on: To spark the session. The LB’s sound giddy with anticipation rather than lethargic and smoked out.
Stevie Wonder – Too High
411: An anti-drug anthem for the strung out seventies, Stevie Wonder’s Too High really really fails as a deterent to drug use. Featuring the soul genius’ funky keyboarding and some of the illest bass work of its era, the opener from Innervisions sounds more like a pot smoker’s anthem than a heroin user’s moment of clarity.
Best feature: The craftsmanship. It’s Stevie F’in Wonder, did you not expect top notch musicianship and soloing?
Put it On: When you’ve finished a spliff solo. This is one for zoning out, not for getting the party started.
Krazie Bone – Smokin Buddah
411: There are about fifty differerent Bone Thugs N Harmony songs dedicated to weed. This is one of them. It sounds like you’d expect but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Best Feature: The laid back vibe. Like em or not, Bone pretty much standardised the sing-songy rapping style that made millionaires out of Nelly, Ja Rule and 50 Cent. If Bone were any more laid back (and avoided devil references) they’d qualify as easy listening.
Put it On: When you’re chillin with the homies. I don’t think I’d ever listen to a Bone Thugs song solo, but they’re great as sonic wallpaper.
Freestyle Fellowship – Mary Jane
411: The Backpacker’s Bone Thugs, chances are if you’re reading this site you either spent the late 90’s arguing that the Freestyle Fellowship invented simple machines or you were rolling your eyes at those making that argument. Mary Jane sounds like a rougher and proggier version of the speedy tongue-twisting rap that’d catch wreck in the mid 90’s. Rest assured, it’s easier on the ears than the stuff they’d put out in the Project Blowed Era.
Best Feature: “M-M-M-M-Mary!” Is a great opening line. Plus the song is surprisingly catchy.
Put it On: To impress backpackers and rap nerds. That’s the whole point of bumping FF material.
O.C and Buckwild – Burn Me Slow
411: A lost collaboration from two of D.I.T.C’s finest, Burn Me Slow is a fine addition to a long line of “weed as ____” concept jams. Thankfully avoiding the potential clichés of the subject matter, O.C and Buckwild play it off like a freestyle, comparing their rhymes to dimes.
Best Feature: Buckwild’s crazy beat, O.C’s insane flow and that classic mid 90’s NYC chorus. Basically the whole song.
Ayo!!!: “Don’t bust shots, son, my face to your man and give a shotgun” Sorry O.C, but shotguns to other men are on some fratboy shit. If you ain’t smoking with a fly shorty leave that shit alone.
Put it On: All the time. Hell this one sounds great sober.
Here’s some more songs to smoke to!!

in honor of Don Imus, i nominate:
Lil Kim – Drugs
if not for the raw and nasty rhymes by Kim (e.g. feel the mist, through the uterus), then surely for the A-1 chorus by Big. and that beat…shucks.

Any list without “How to Roll a Blunt” by Redman is in the words of the Noble one himself all fucked up. After all he offered us peace from the tri-state to the Middle East under the pretense of getting weeded; now that’s what I call a peace treaty!
— DJ Flash Apr 18, 04:28 AM
On a side note, what’s the deal with Buckwild using the same beat for Burn Me Slow and Royal Flush’s I Been Gettin’ So Much $? Did he figure Burn Me Slow was never coming out so he gave the beat to Royal Flush?
— Perttu Apr 18, 08:30 AM
