This Week In Blogging
While you were sleeping, the RIAA has been working on shutting down Internet radio. You may want to save it before you wake up wondering why it’s all controlled by big money.
Gabe said “We’re into movements” sometimes puts me off because it’s actually too next level to follow at times. Its G is too futuristic. But I’ve learned to embrace the confusion and appreciate the disorientation.
Dude mostly hits them out of the park and the internet at large is sleeping. 2 new posts there this week: Hannah and her Sisters and Release what’s in me
OUT ON THE ROAD TODAY, I SAW A MURDER INC. STICKER ON AN ESCALADE. Gotta love the wistful Don Henley reference for aging boomer Hov. Esoteric? Yes and proud.
That Good Good hits us off with a pause tape of choice mc pauses.
Joey and Jeff are collecting top 25 album lists.
Why are rappers working so hard? And why are they all lying about it?
Some great replies from Davey D and Saul Williams to all this anti-hip-hop malarchy.
Bomani isn’t buying Russell Simmons reply though.
I don’t know how to feel about it. It’s not like rap music is just about disrespecting women. There’s also weed, weed, weed and guns.
Stretch Armstrong loves girls, girls, girls, girls…
I’m sure you know by now that Cam’ron is going to be on 60 minutes tomorrow night discussing why snitching is bad for us. Ethan Brown calls Cam’ron’s stance “astoundingly ignorant” but Too Sense sees the sense in it. No matter how you feel about snitching and the stoppage thereof, that sounds like must-see television to me.
The entire Pharoahe Monch Discography in two monstrous posts at Rap Dungeon – the official album releases and the guest spots, remixes and unreleased shit.
WYDU compiles Slick Rick’s Greatest Hits.
This week is my first time hearing of the “Better than Butt Sex” blog and I can tell I’m going to be a fan. In this post they feature the unreleased orignal version of “Thought @ Work” and Big Daddy Kane’s “Raw” demo featuring a verse from Kool G Rap.
AllHipHop talks to DJ Jazzy Jeff about his sitcom days, the Little Brother split and where to get the best cheesesteak in Philly.

Kardinal Offishal did that cool custom painted Wii to be given away for a promotion going on at TheArtofWii.ca. Saddingly, the contest is open to Canadians only.
And even more cool shit that I’m geographically prohibited from taking part in… GZA will be performing his classic Liquid Swords album in its entirety as part of a summer-time concert Pitchfork is holding in Chicago.
Joe Buck, who did all the old De La Soul album art, has a new clothing company. The shirt designs look so bad-ass.
Speaking of old De La, SLurg offers up a rare track (“Freedom of Speak”) from the Plug Tunin 12” and also the 5-mic review of De la Soul is Dead in the Source.
Brother Ali album sells over 10,000 in its first week. Who says internet fans don’t buy albums? In highly related news, Brother Ali discusses his indie label’s distribution deal with Warner Music. Lots of coverage of the Madison-born Brother Ali this week over at Emcees Without Voices.
As someone who only knows his Inspiration Information album, I appreciated hearing two other Shuggie Otis songs over at earfuzz.
I don’t know whether to be amused or concerned that Better Than Yours is suddenly doing a bunch of reporting on Hollywood celebrities.
Explaining David Blaine’s tricks.
Top 5 Sade basslines, including that one from Doomsday.
Floodwatch also throws a Pete Rock beat on the dissection table. Put on your lab goggles.
To me the best part of the Imus post at Cocaine Blunts is when noz reminds us that, despite pow-wowing with Spelman students on the Oprah show this week about how to stop all the ho-calling in hip-hop, Common once said he “housed more hoes than Spelman”.
Smoking Section talks to the makers of the Rock the Bells documentary.
Galactic Mystery Solvers takes it back to “the corner”.
Off to see the wizard of blackness.
The Bronx is still globally recognized as the borough you cross the street to avoid. Fear it or destroy it. That goes for German soldiers and New Yorkers alike.
Certified Hip Hop moves backwards to insure that I can no longer read nor link to their content. They’ve changed their format from blog to full site. Unfortunately in doing so, they move to frameset pages (articles don’t have a unique url), forum and no RSS feed(s).
Those who don’t understand the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them. CHH has some good stuff and I’d like to see them succeed so hopefully they remedy these mistakes.
oh snap

Not to be that guy who argues over matters of opinion, BUT...... Predators #9 and Death Certificate doesnt even make the cut?
— Abe Beame Apr 22, 08:07 AM
OB4CL is my personal #1, yet I’m too lazy to think of a full 25. Meh.

Well guess what? You ARE that guy

— ass hat Apr 23, 06:15 AM
On one hand, I’m glad Oprah had the hip hop discussion show, on the other hand, I say f*** Oprah. Why not have people who have been going over the issue with some intellect and committment to rap music for years, who criticise out of love, like the Rap sessions crew? Didn’t it seem like she tried to make it like Imus’ meeting w/ the Rutgers women?
— Gandalf Mantooth Apr 23, 10:44 AM
“What it do my hipster?”
“Ain’t shit you bitch ass hipster, whats good with you?”
“Awww dude you’ll never believe this. You know how I write that shitty blog no one reads?”
“No.”
“Yeah, well, miraculously this hip hop website linked it for a post I wrote about a great TV mini series I kind of half mockingly reviewed and threw up a couple pirated ill fitting tracks that literally reference the word corner in the title. So I go to thank the website out of shocked gratitude and in the comments section these fucking LOSERS are actually talking about hip hop.”
“No way dude, whatd you do?”
“I called them losers!”
“Dude you are one cold ass hipster.”
“I know, epic right? I’m out, I gotta write a follow up post about Bright Eyes and Wilco. My last one actually got more than one comment, new site record!”
— Abe Beame Apr 23, 01:50 PM
Oh Word, thanks for all the links!!
Note, Common just has a cleaner image than someone like 50. Period. You’ll hear the same sentiments on Like Water for Chocolate and I believe you might hear it on Be.
Hey, another Freakonomics fan. No doubt.
