Uta the Unseen and a new mixtape from Dujeous · by Rafi Kam
Dujeous look ecstatic that finally the Uta story can be told.
I have this friend named Mike. Back in high school Mike had a concept for a movie centered around a villainous telepathic brain in a jar, hell-bent on vengeance and world domination. The fearsome character was named Uta … Uta the Unseen!
It was 1993 and I had fully embraced my senioritis (I never quite recovered) by taking the elective course “Film & Video”. There was this cool guy named Loren in my class whose genuine dream was to become a filmmaker. After we had made our first movies with separate groups, Loren and I decided we should work together on a project. I told him about Uta the Unseen and strangely he was also into the idea. We would brainstorm script ideas in class though we never got far past the comedy of the title.
We never got to deliver an Uta the Unseen video because the class sucked and there never was a second video project. Instead, we had assignments like watching “The Adventures of Teddy Z” (which our teacher was sure would be a big hit) and this new David Letterman replacement named Conan (who didn’t have a chance of lasting more than a season).
Loren did end up going on to study film. He also continued to play with the same band he was involved with in high school. Loren is also known as Mojo, one of the three mc’s that front the (very live) hip-hop band Dujeous. And he just hit me up with a new Dujeous mixtape called Game 7 specifically for the Internets to enjoy.
Dujeous formed nearly fifteen years ago which means that I’m too damn old. In a way it’s kind odd to think about belonging to the same rap group since way back in 1992. But now I’ll tell you an even stranger thing to be part of fifteen years later.
My friend Mike got married two months ago. Ghostface skit deconstructionist Rob Sosin brought a brain in a jar to the steakhouse bachelor party dinner. After the meal we passed the jar around the table, drank the champagne formaldehyde and then made like zombies devouring the brain.

I’m reminiscing on the days of Miss Marsh’s class right now, Rafi. Here’s an idea…we can organize an all Hunter alum hip-hop show consisting of Dujeous, Roosevelt Franklin, Immortal Technique, and a humble superstar and Celebrity Fit Club graduate by the name of Young MC. Maybe Miranda from Sex & the City can spit a verse as well. Of course it will all be sponsored by ohword.com. The brainstorming continues…
