Screw a romance novel or New York Times best-seller. In the double oh seven we stay reading LCD screens.
Here are some recommendations for you.
Oh Word side projects
You already know that agent b is destroying/saving the future with his terrifically strange dystopian beats, sci-fi and art project ROBOTOBOTS.
There’s a fantastic ROBOTOBOTS interview with Gus and agent b over at the Nintendo-themed site N+. It’s really impressive how these guys created their own lane with the WiiMix project. Although ROBOTOBOTS has some sick beats behind it, the cinematic narrative qualities make it hard to pin down in terms of musical genre. It was a brilliant leap to figure that gamers would appreciate this musical style and then create the WiiMix as b says in the interview as their “Trojan Horse”.
This week also saw Sacha dropping a very nice guest post at Passion of the Weiss on one of his favorite topics – French rap.
And although Internets Celebrities is more summer viewing than summer reading I need to plug it here too because we do get into behind the scenes tales or commentary on the videos we’ve done.
Now on to some blogs that are recent discoveries for me but have seriously impressed me with consistent quality. They’re not hip-hop per se but what that’s truly worth recommending is?
Breath of Life | a conversation about black music
Breath of Life uses a frameset, only publishes new material on Sundays and doesn’t link to its mp3’s from within the posts so I have to click out of my RSS reader to hear in the audio. I could see myself usually bitching about such trivial things but with content this rich who cares!
The site publishes articles on 3 works every Sunday: “a classic (music that is a major example of a specific genre or style), a contemporary (music produced within the last decade or so), and a cover (previously recorded music that is given a new or different interpretation).” The two authors are scholarly without being dry, each giving their perspective on the artist or work and always keeping context in mind. The frameset attempts to immerse you in something more multimedia than your typical blog entry, giving you an mp3 player so you can play the many songs referenced by each article as you read them.
Breath of Life’s name couldn’t be more apt. The site is like a living museum of black music history led by two talented curators. Very highly recommended.
Baseball’s official chat-room is hilarious stuff from the player name puns to the high and low cultural allusions. Many more hits than misses.
Check their recent Elijah Dukes joint.
Just Blaze, Stretch Armstrong, Steinski and Alyssa Milano aren’t the only celebrities to recently take up blogging. Don’t forget Marc Andreesen, creator of the first popular web browser (Mosaic) and co-founder of Netscape.
In his first 16 posts he’s already dropped some classics on why there’s no such thing as Web 2.0 and how to change your life to be more productive. And he already dedicated an entire post to a Damon Dash quote.
Will this join my upper-echelon of business / new media blogs, joining the likes of Seth Godin, Copyblogger, and Publishing 2.0? It’s off to a great start so probably…
