OhWord’s favorite fresh coast roller-derby girl and ruthless one-liner reviewer Arlene and I have something in common other than our dislike of Lupe Fiasco: we’re both Crackberry addicts/geeks. Our fanatical adoration of the Blackberry Curve smartphone is entirely justifiable. These glorious lil’ gizmos can play mp3s and videos and allow you to browse the (crippled yet functional) internet, send and receive push-email, SMS, and MMS messages, peruse RSS feeds, use Google Map search with sattelite view and cellular triangulation, and log on to multiple IM clients simultaneously. On some futuristic robotic George Jetson crazy steez.
Yet despite being wedded to these contraptions neither of us gave the native Blackberry messenger application a second thought. We simply did not know enough people with Blackberries to bother, and our beloved Curve covered every perceivable communication need. But our curiosity remained stoked and we do not subscribe to the level of hubris required to ignore an endeavor on account of superfluity. So we gave it a go and lo and behold, the BB Messenger is a great app that runs smoothly and allows for conference chatting and file transfer.
In need of others to accompany us into a chasm of distraction and brand-specific carpal tunnel syndrome, Arlene and I shamelessly begged the denizens of the Philaflava forums to add our PINs to their contacts list. One such person, who goes by the screen name Tanner (who is an emcee/dj in his own right) added me yesterday and within minutes we were discussing the fact that he was throwing a rap concert featuring none other than The Geto Boys, on a boat, during the SXSW Festival/Conference. He expressed interest in covering the event for OhWord and sure enough my Blackberry Messenger alerted me to good news today; Tanner sent me the pic you see above and I received it while waiting in line for some afternoon falafel.
While it’s not Bushwick Bill on a boat (Bushwick was less enthused about seafaring than the rest of the Geto Boys and opted out), it is a photo that was snapped and distributed entirely through Blackberry devices. I even used my Curve to uploaded the shot to Picasa through a Google mobile web app. What an age we live in. More pics to come…
