Knowledge, fresh beats from Philly · by Sweeney Kovar
Straight outta Illadelphia, Knowledge began making beats before he could remember (true story) and is slowly but surely building up a healthy MySpace buzz amongst post-Dilla beat makers. This guy is a problem, but the problem is not too many people know about him.
I can remember when I first met him online and began to get a few beat snippets over AIM a few years ago. I can’t lie; my very first impression was that the beats sounded a little out there. But the more time we spent building, the more I understood where he was coming from and was able to realize this dude was for real.
Knowledge is a workhorse as well. Peep his myspace, he changes beats on there damn near daily, and I know that is only a taste of all the shit he is cooking up at the crib. He has some kind of instrumental EP in the works and he just had a beat on Invincible’s stellar debut LP, so I’m glad to see more people beginning to gravitate towards the kind of music he is creating.
It was a little hazy back then, but now I can see there is a musical common ground that you can hear when you peep cats like Flying Lotus, Ras_G, Samiyam, Hudson Mohawke and others. I’d like to add Knowledge from Philly to that list.

Wow – the snippet from Directionz – gorgeous. Puts me in mind of a NZ album called Roofers by Breaks Co-op. The second album breaks was way to folky for me but the first was as lush and gorgeous as this.
